Drowning in Footwear

My winter traditions are fairly unconventional. I wait for Celestial Seasonings’ winter teas to show up at my local grocer’s (so I can stock up on enough Candy Cane Lane to last me until spring), I make Smashing, Gloop and Frostbite soaps, and I hit Sock Dreams for a selection of stripes to keep my toes warm.

It does, in fact, get good and cold even here in middle Tennessee. While I spent the summer and most of September teetering around the soap room in 3” heels and Italian leather…

…I’m a little less inclined to play fast and loose with my appendages and hypothermia. [Yes, I’ll risk my neck, but not my toes. ] For chic days, I scored a darling pair of Black Patent Ballet Flats (at a deep discount, lmty) and a yummy pair of Grape Ballet Flats. But on rainy blustery days? I am rocking last year’s motorcycle boots. For that, I need Sock Dreams.

This year I opted for the Random Stripe, Hemp Birdseye, and Pinstripe Crews. I got everything in either teal or burgundy, and not only are they brilliantly warm and comfortable, there’s an added Eco-Sock bonus. E.G. Smith has a new line of green footwear - the styles I selected feature recycled cotton, sustainable hemp fiber, and organic cotton - and donate a portion of their profits to environmental orgs that work on global warming. I might have also snagged a pair of Vertically Inclined Stockings in black/charcoal - LOVELY.

As usual, I was 100% satisfied with the quality and specs of everything I ordered. The best part of Sock Dreams? Full disclosure. They have the same concerns you have, and anything you could possibly wonder about fit, wear, quality, and fabric is right there on the site. I love knowing exactly what I’m getting. Ah ha! Did some reading at the Sock Journal and uncovered a few more specifics about E.G. Smith’s recycling. What a way to reduce waste!

I’ve been eyeballing that same pair of Madden wedges (I resisted them on sale at Macy’s), though TBH it’s not like I need another pair of shoes!

I hit up SockDreams every couple of months to stock up on things to keep me from freezing to death when rocking out skirts and dresses in winter (I own the Vertically Inclined Stockings in both the gorgeous green/black and also red/black).

I love the trend of pairing colorful tights/socks with peep-toe pumps — it means I can get more use out of shoes I otherwise wouldn’t be able to wear because A) It’s too freakin’ cold, or B) I’ve stopped getting pedicures and my feet are starting to resemble those of Frodo Baggins.

I’m really loving the Madden Wedges. When I got them, I was debating between these and a pair of plummy Hush Puppies flats - these just looked so fuschia online. In person though, they are much more grapey and just lovely. Still breaking them in - my right toes are pinching a bit, but very comfortable overall. My black patent flats are super stiff by comparison.

I may score the Madden wedges in brown as well - they just look so wearable!

Agreed re: tights w/ peep toes - much too cute for winter. I should really try and wear skirts more. I seem to default to jeans most days.

I love Sock Dreams! I had the opportunity to visit their store last weekend, and it’s just as cute as you’d expect. I also have the Vertically Inclined stockings, and they wear -wonderfully-. I’ve had them for…oh, close to a year now, I think? Very good construction on those.
